I finished the book Never Let Me Go tonight and then watched the movie immediately after. That means I’ve sobbed uncontrollably twice on my couch tonight.
I really didn’t expect to have such a strong emotional reaction at the end of the book because the writing itself was quite unsentimental, but it creeps up on you. Suddenly near the end you feel the full weight of the story. And the love story, so subtly drawn throughout the book, hits you like a truck. Ow. It hurts.
I loved both. The film never quite matches up to the book, of course, but it was beautifully done. All the finer points were reduced a more heavy-handed approach, but that’s to be expected with a movie adapted from a book. And the visuals alone made up for it. I thought Carey Mulligan was perfect in her role. Who saw it/read it/what did you think?
